Our Senior Principle Engineer, Chuck Teixeira, once said, "If you haven’t ridden an aluminum bike lately, you haven’t ridden an aluminum bike." He had a point. Carbon fiber might hog all the spotlight these days, but aluminum still has plenty to offer and far more possibilities to explore. True, alloy frames used to be painfully stiff, heavy, and they underperformed in comparison to their carbon fiber counterparts. But that was then, and this is now.
So, why did we bring aluminum back to the pro peloton after over a decade on hiatus? Just like their carbon fiber counterparts, our Allez line is leaps and bounds ahead of its time—often outperforming carbon fiber bikes from other brands. But you're probably wondering how? And the answer is found in our D’Aluisio Smartweld Technology. This tech takes the weld joint on a frame and moves it away from the area of the highest stress, making the finished frame's balance of strength, rigidity, and weight more pronounced than any alloy frame in history.
Ok, so we solved for stiffness and weight, but what about the harsh ride characteristics that have long plagued aluminum frames? By employing butted, hydroformed tubes, we've removed excess material from low-stress areas, and this allows our engineers to create a natural compliance in the tubes of the frame. Pretty cool, right? But we know that all the proposed tech in the world is useless without validation out on the road. And while we know how well the Allez rides, we saw a need to share this with the rest of the world. That's why we’ve teamed up with Hagens Berman Axeon Cycling Team to race the Allez.
Even in its infancy, the Allez's partnership with Hagens Berman Axeon has already proved to be a fruitful one. In the first three months of 2018 racing, Axeon has had some stupendous results, with a win at Dorpenomloop Rucphen, a top-10 at the Handzame Classic, a third place finish at Driedaagse De Panne, a Christopher Blevins Stage Two win at the San Dimas Stage Race, Sean Bennet with a resounding seventh place at Gent-Wevelgem, Thomas Revard taking GC at Redlands Bicycle Classic, and a remarkable 6th on Stage 1 of the 2018 Tour of California for Jasper Philipsen behind the likes of Fernando Gaviria and Peter Sagan.
